The Lions' Bridge - Newport News, VirginiaIntroducing the Newport News Public Art Foundation

The NNPAF is a public, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to transform the visual appearance of the city of Newport News, Virginia, through the selection and location of major pieces of sculpture throughout the city. NNPAF intends to bring to Newport News a body of permanent sculpture, to be supplemented from time to time with temporary sculpture, so that the overall experience of living and working in Newport News is improved and enhanced.

The NNPAF will enable us to become familiar with available sculpture suitable for location in Newport News and to develop a mosaic of locations in the city for public art. NNPAF also has a duty to develop strategies for funding the acquisition of these works as well as the preservation of public art already located in the city.

The Selection of Public Art

It is the intention of NNPAF to bring works of art that will have lasting value and quality, and that will expand the public’s appreciation and enjoyment of this art. We will select pieces that will enhance the daily experience of living in Newport News. Temporary works will meet the same criteria and may include works that are more challenging and unusual. While the search for quality public sculpture will be worldwide, we will concentrate on local, state, and regional sculptors.

Site Selections

Art must feel at home. Sites under consideration for public sculpture directly impact the selection and are the major element that maximizes the desirability of certain pieces. Criteria will include but not be limited to:

  • Points of arrival into Newport News
  • Areas that have achieved local or historical distinctions
  • Locations that would be particularly suitable or dramatic
  • Placement near architecturally prominent or distinguished areas
  • Sites that may be environmentally interesting or lend themselves to sculpture-in-series
